Altruism in the Animal Kingdom

We often think of nature as "red in tooth and claw," but altruism—behavior that benefits another at a cost to oneself—is surprisingly common. Humpback whales have been observed protecting seals from orca attacks, often positioning themselves between the predator and the prey.

Octopuses and Tools

The Veined Octopus (Amphioctopus marginatus) is known to collect coconut shells, carry them over long distances, and then assemble them into a protective "mobile home." This is one of the few recorded instances of tool use in invertebrates.

Grieving in Elephants

Elephants are famous for their memory, but their capacity for emotion is equally profound. They have been observed visiting the carcasses of deceased family members, gently touching the tusks and bones with their trunks in what appears to be a ritualized form of mourning.
